LUGRadio Live

It’s been a two day geek-fest in Wolverhampton with my good friend and blogger Simon. He’s also blogging about it, and will be able to provide a more technical view of the discussions that we went to.

I have to say it was good fun, even though sometimes I felt that I was the only person in the room that didn’t get the joke. The perils of being a noob I guess.

Some issues cropped up several time. One of these is the new version of the GPL License, under which most Open Source products are released.

The other is of more direct interest to me, the impending release of the BBC’s iPlayer. The issues around this are complex, but there’s a very simple analogy… how would people feel if a new tv station can only be viewed by people who have Sony or Panasonic TV’s. I’ve still got a Windows machine at home for my OU work, (and of course at work), but most of my fun surfing is still done on my aging iBook (more tomorrow about this). The BBC’s announcement promises mac versions soon, but nothing for the Linux community.

For more comprehensive coverage, I recommend Simon’s postings here, here and here.
